Bringing In Hitler

I was just thinking about various organizations and in a bit of free-association, came to thinking about one of my teachers in 11th grade public school. His name, if I recall correctly, was Barry Friedman. As the name implies, he was probably Jewish, as some of the students referred to him as “the Jewish Pope.” He was also probably gay, based on my observations of his mannerisms.

I’ve noticed that people say that you know when a discussion topic has been beat to death is when someone (on either side) compares the subject to Adolph Hitler, or labels one of the participants as being akin to Hitler.

Well, this is eactly what Mr. Friedman did on a regular basis — he was always comparing the dictators of world history to Hitler, and he did this on a regular basis. His other bit of schtick was noting homosexual tendencies in world leaders of whom he thought favorably.

At the time, none of us had the nerve to tell him that the schtick was tired after the second or third week. Now, I’d probably speak up and say, “Give it a rest.”

Still, invoking Hitler and the National Socialist history does have its uses. Especially when dealing with “leftist” fascists, such as the local “Atheist” group. Recently, I joined that one after one of the [lpnm-discuss] members crossposted a few messages to there. Let’s just say that the word “Freethinkers” in the group name is a misnomer, as you’re free to post there provided that you don’t offend anyone by questioning their “leftist” politics.

Basically, my “offense” there was to take the word “Freethinkers” in the group title seriously, and dared to question the “progressive” idiocies posted by the usuals there. On several occasions, I followed the advice of L. Neil Smith [1] and referred to the “leftists” there as fascists. The group owner and moderator, some clown who goes by “Max Will,” said that I was “out of line” and that further questioning of the resident “progressives” would get me kicked out. This was after a few posts that I sent that were not sufficiently reverent to their worship of The State, Karl Marx and Mother Earth.

It’s not the first time that I’ve been told to “shut the fuck up.” The other time that really comes to mind was back in May 2005, when then-LNC Region 6 “representative” George Squyres questioned whether or not I should be retained as the BCLP Chair, all because of a letter to the editor that I had written a year earlier [2].

The fact remains that some people can’t handle vigorous, strident debating, and others can. I would suggest that those who cannot should steer clear of the places where those who can hang out, for the sake of their own peace of mind.

And I can’t help wondering what Mr. Friedman would have thought of organizations like Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership or Pink Pistols.

[1] Tactical Reflections

Conservatives are accustomed to being called fascists and are well prepared to defend themselves on that
ground. Liberals are used to being called socialists. Those labels can be switched, however, and remain
valid and instructive. It also catches them completely unprepared.
