Book Review — Faith Seeking Freedom: Libertarian Christian Answers to Tough Questions

BOOK REVIEW — Faith Seeking Freedom: Libertarian Christian Answers to Tough Questions

129 pages, by Dr. Norman Horn, Doug Stuart, Kerry Baldwin, and Dick Clark

FULL DISCLOSURES:

  • Kerry Baldwin has been a Facebook friend for several years now.
  • I don’t profess to be a Christian of any denomination or sect or whatever. Organized religion and I simply don’t do well together.

With those out of the way . . . .

Faith Seeking Freedom is easy reading, in that the authors don’t try to cram you chock-full of data and information and jargon, such that you would feel overwhelmed by it all.

When the authors cite Biblical content, they put the citation right there in the same paragraph as the point that they’re making, so you don’t have to keep flipping back and forth to the end of the chapter or the end of the book. This is probably for the best where electronic versions are concerned. Also, for those inclined to have a Bible nearby to check on the authors, it’s right there where you can compare and contrast the authors’ points against the Bible verse(s) itself.

The authors don’t attempt to take sides where the big divisions of libertarian thought occur, such as the minarchy vs. anarchy debate, or whether or not to be involved in the LP, with the exception of the abortion issue.

SPECIFIC POINTS

[Page numbers cited here are what listed is on the particular page. The actual pages on the PDF version that I used for this review will be that number, plus 10 pages.]

Chapter 2 (The Libertarian Basics, pp. 23-34) gives the reader a decent summary of the Non-Aggression Principle and how it applies to everyday life.

p. 26, part of the answer to Question #13 (How do libertarian Christians account for people who violate the non-aggression principle (NAP)?) takes on the minarchy vs. anarchy question rather well — the authors explain both sides without explicitly favoring one side or the other. (Disclosure: I personally lean towards the anarcho-capitalist side.)

p.39, Question #25 (Do libertarians believe any and every government is illegitimate?) also tackles the minarchy vs. anarchy adroitly, explaining both sides without favoring one or the other.

pp. 67-68 give a succinct and principled response to the “What about roads?” shibboleth.

OK, enough spoilers.

Do me a favor Do yourself a favor — Go and get a copy and read it for yourself.

SUMMARY

Faith Seeking Freedom is an easy-to-read, principled guide for Christians who are seeking to understand libertarianism, on par with Inclined to Liberty by Louis Carabini, The Law by Frederic Bastiat, or Down With Power by L. Neil Smith.

Go get a copy, read it, then tell your friends and family.

“No one wants to take your guns,” v. July 3, 2020

From the Albuquerque Journal, Friday, 3 July 2020, p. A11 OP-ED (“SPEAK UP!”)

KUDOS TO the Santa Fe County Commission for passing on the purchase of AR-15 weapons for the Santa Fe sheriff’s department SWAT officers. . . . Instead of just waiting, as Sheriff Mendoza seems inclined to do because of “the current climate in the nation,” I recommend the funds be redirected to a buyback and destruction of this type of weapon from civilians who have no legitimate need for them. “No one wants to take your guns,” NM v. 02-28-2020

From page A15 of the Friday, 28 February 2020 edition of the Albuquerque Journal, we have not one, but two “gems of wisdom.”

First, the writer labels anyone that owns or carries a firearm a “gun possessor,” and makes NO attempt to distinguish between criminal misuse of firearms and safe and proficient defensive uses.

So drug testing for welfare recipients, or as a condition of employment is unConstitutional and a violation of rights, but perfectly OK if you want to purchase a firearm?

Politicians Need to Follow the Law, Too [ABQ Journal — Letter to the Editor]

In today’s Journal, I read an letter to the editor by Quay County Attorney Warren F. Frost [1] saying that the 29 county sheriffs who prefer their constituents’ individual liberty over Bloomberg-financed victim disarmament dictats from Santa Fe should resign or face the possibility of removal should they refuse to follow those dictats.

Frost cites Article XX, Section 1 of the New Mexico State Constitution [2] as his rationale on this —

Every person elected or appointed to any office shall, before entering upon his duties, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation that he will support the constitution of the United States and the constitution and laws of this state, and that he will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of his office to the best of his ability.

Where in that clause do public officials, elected or appointed, reserve the right to blow off parts of the State Constitution that they don’t care for, as if those parts don’t exist?

In this case, I’m referring to willful disregard for Article II, Section 6, as repeatedly displayed by Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham and the Legislature.

Article II, Section 6 reads as follows —

No law shall abridge the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes, but nothing herein shall be held to permit the carrying of concealed weapons. No municipality or county shall regulate, in any way, an incident of the right to keep and bear arms. (As amended November 2, 1971 and November 2, 1986.)

If the 29 of 33 county sheriffs who are opposed to the Bloomberg-financed victim disarmament campaign are subject to removal for refusing to follow its dictats, then why are Lujan-Grisham and her fellow victim disarmers in the Legislature not subject to removal for their refusal to abide by Article II, Section 6?

RED FLAG DEBATE

Look who’s blowing off the Constitution now

The 2020 DNC Presidential “Debates”

For those of you who have been carefully watching the DNC-sponsored “debates” between various “presidential candidates,” trying to figure out which of them has the most “innovative” “solutions” to America’s “problems,” let me sum them all up for you with a picture —

The DNC and its affiliates, as they’ve been since 1970. [Image H/T Stephen Carville]

As far as any of these . . . individuals . . . is concerned, your life, liberty, money, property, and pursuit(s) of happiness don’t belong to you at all.

NONE of these . . . persons . . . displays any evidence of caring about your individual rights, privileges or immunities in the slightest.

Rather, in their minds, your life, liberty, money, property, and pursuit(s) of happiness are theirs, to take away, to give to others, to use as they see fit, or to destroy, at their arbitrary and capricious whim.

In their minds, your individual rights, privileges or immunities aren’t yours at all in any way, but theirs, to be granted to you or taken away from you at their discretion.

In the end, tuning in to these cretins and idiots is a total waste of time, electricity, and bandwidth, in my opinion.
