[ABQ Journal] ABQ mayor’s marijuana veto survives challenge

ABQ mayor’s marijuana veto survives challenge

Mayor Richard Berry’s veto of a marijuana decriminalization bill withstood a challenge from Albuquerque city councilors on Wednesday.

Democrats on the City Council failed to persuade one of their Republican colleagues to change positions and join them in favor of a veto override.

But no one changed positions. The override attempt failed on a 5-4 vote along party lines.

It takes six of nine councilors to override a mayoral veto.

About a half-dozen speakers urged councilors to override the veto and enact the legislation – which called for making it a civil offense, not a criminal violation, under city law to possess an ounce or less of marijuana.

A companion bill sought to make marijuana a low priority for law enforcement.

Berry, a Republican, vetoed both proposals. He said they conflicted with state and federal law.

Councilors Isaac Benton and Rey Garduño, who co-sponsored the legislation, said cities have authority to set their own penalties for marijuana possession. That gives police officers discretion to cite people under either a local ordinance or under state law, they said.

Furthermore, the two argued, local voters already support reducing marijuana penalties.

“We don’t have to wait for the federal government or the state of New Mexico to tell us how to govern our own community, or respond to the voice of the community,” Benton said as he read a joint statement.

About 60 percent of Bernalillo County voters last year expressed support for decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana. That was in response to a nonbinding question on the general-election ballot.

None of the council’s four Republicans spoke about the veto Wednesday. But they’ve previously said they don’t view city government as the right venue for changing drug laws.

That didn’t stop people from trying to change their minds.

Mike Blessing of the Libertarian Party of New Mexico told councilors they were supporting organized crime if they refuse to change the law. Support for an override, however, means “you’re standing up for free markets,” Blessing said.

Other supporters said that a marijuana conviction can make it hard to find a job and that enforcement draws resources away from more-serious crimes.

“The war on drugs has been a terrible failure,” Garduño said. “We know this isn’t working.”

In New Mexico, marijuana use is legal only for medical purposes.

Supporting the override were Benton, Garduño, Ken Sanchez, Diane Gibson and Klarissa Peña, all Democrats.

Republicans Brad Winter, Dan Lewis, Trudy Jones and Don Harris voted “no.”

Dear New Mexicans, — 1 item —

Breaking: This came in moments ago.

Progressive Democrat, Pat Davis — founder of Progressive Now and running for city council, District 6, is running against the Republican candidate, Hess “Hessito” Yntema.

We need very importantly to elect the Republican, Hessito. There is a good opportunity to do so.

District 6 voters have 3 choices for City Councilor: Progressive Pat Davis, another Democrat who is challenging him and Hess “Hessito” Yntema, a Republican.

Whatever your party affiliation, you should know that Pat Davis has a DWI record, about which he lied to the Albuquerque Journal.

He told the Journal that he accepts responsibility for the arrest. However, the Journal has evidence that that is not exactly true. The Journal states that Mr. Davis’ attorney tried for months to have the charges dismissed, filing several motions to that end. Only when those motions to dismiss were denied did Mr. Davis “accept responsibility.”

Personally, I urge voters to vote for the Republican. With the possibility of a bigger effort coming for the so-called “fair” work week that the Progressives are pushing, it is vital to strengthen the Republican position on the City Council. I surely hope everyone will vote early.

Thank you for your attention to this e-mail.

What evidence exists that Little Hessie actually cares about those Tea Party values of laissez-faire free markets, Constitutionally-limited government, individual rights and public-sector fiscal restraint?

It should be plain for all who do care about those values that someone simply having “REP” printed on their voter registration card isn’t sufficient proof of a candidate’s fidelity to the cause of freedom.

Will Hess Jr. stand up for those Tea Party values against the likes of the Keynesian Richard Berry when it comes time to vote against such “improvements” as the 50-mile bike path, the summertime skating rink?

How about when Friedman Recycling demands a guaranteed profit margin from its contract with the Berry Administration?

What is his position on the right to own and carry weapons, as protected by the Second Amedment and Article II, Section 6 of the New Mexico State Constitution?

Will Hess Jr. stand up for that right, or will he treat gun owners as Nate Gentry, Monica Youngblood and Susana Martinez have in the past — as a political soccer ball, to be kicked around when it’s expedient to do so?

Trump and the GOP

Filed under: Comedy, Humor, Politics, Principles — Tags: , , , , , , , — mikewb1971 @ 5:32 AM

6/29/2015 5:15 PM:

“Cultural Marxism and its many variants, such as political correctness and multiculturalism, is now firmly ensconced in the White House and the Democrat Party, while the Republican Party, dominated by eunuchs and the avaricious, continuously accommodates its “principles” to match an ever-shifting leftward movement of the “conventional wisdom.” It does so solely to maintain its place as the token opposition and grifter at the federal tax-revenue trough for the personal financial benefits that it provides.

I’ve never seen a more perfect summation of the GOP’s “principles” or more accurately, lack thereof, principles — besides the following:

  1. Milking the donors.
  2. Filling as many public offices with fellow GOP trough-feeders as possible.
  3. Milking the rest of the population on behalf of themselves and their sponsors, using the tax-feeding officeholders.

Perhaps Rand Paul will follow in his father’s footsteps and be an exception to this. Possibly Ted Cruz, as well. As for the rest, they’re mere media-hounding streetwalker wannabes, such as Mr. Trump . . . .

I like Donald Trump in a half-hearted way. I like his macho no-nonsense response to those who try to pretend business is merely the handmaiden of politics. I like that he is aware of his own hard work to build his business and greatly increase the fortune his father bequeathed to him.

Except for his corporate bankruptcies, that is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump#Legal_affairs

I like that he is proud of his success, neither meek or humble. But I don’t like what I consider a failing of many business people, a lack of grasp of fundamental principles.

Donald Trump’s guiding principle seems to be limited to one: Donald Trump.

Whatever keeps him in the limelight seems to be OK with him.

Until I see otherwise, I’ll consider his 2016 campaign to be prep work for another season of The Apprentice.

I fear that like Joe McCarthy, he will go overboard and kill his own best characteristics, making himself a buffoon similar to Joe Biden if he does not become more fully acquainted with the basic premises of his political position.

Trump is very, very good at making a buffoon of himself.

Back in 2008, Trump attempted to run for president on the Reform Party ticket, advocating a 14% tax on rich people.

For example, recently, it looks as though he paid people $50 a head to show up at his “presidential announcement” rally and make it look like they like him:

Spam, Spam and More Spam

Another bit of spam circulated to me from the infrared-emitting meat-puppet (R) in the Billingsley “vs.” Bregman turd-polishing contest commonly referred to as “the U.S. Senate race” :

9/27/2014 6:26 AM:

From the Weh campaign, Albuquerque

“Why is long-time entrenched career politician Tom Udall running negative campaign ads? Because he doesn’t want you to know the facts.

Udall’s new attack ad today claims we want to deny seniors their healthcare. Who is he kidding?

He’s the only candidate in this race that voted to cut Medicare by $716 billion when he cast his deciding vote for ObamaCare! He cast a deciding vote to rob Medicare to help pay for it. “Tom Foolery” at its best!

So the GOP plan to “support health freedom” is to complain about Obama’s 21st century scheme of medical national socialism by saying it will take away from Lyndon Johnson’s 1965 scheme of medical national socialism?

They do know that Lyndon Johnson was a Democrat? One of the people that they say they’re against, correct?

So much for the GOP supporting those Tea Party ideals of free markets, limited government and individual rights.

But the reality of campaign advertising is that it can influence voters — even if it’s not true. And Udall’s ad is not only NOT true, it’s almost a joke! But now we have to quickly craft an ad to reply to this false attack, and that costs money we hadn’t planned on.

What’s the matter? Did Weh run out of funds from his profiteering shell-game known as “CSI Aviation” ? Not enough taxpayer FRNs coming in from We The Fleeced to count as “contributions” ?

He can always pass the hat to Slick Willard Romney.

But Weh has a two-shot here – after Weh responds to the latest Udall attempt at mudslinging, then Weh can do another ad telling us how great that ad was – isn’t that how it works?

Please help us respond to Udall’s attack so we can get the real truth out to our voters. Please give $75, $150, or $250 to help us stand up to Tom Udall.

Ask David Clements for some cash.

From NMC4F

From David Clements’ campaign regarding the allegation made “on a website called BernalilloCoverup.com, Clements accuses Weh’s campaign manager of hacking Clements’ campaign email account.” [1] . . .

According to the Clements campaign yesterday regarding the alleged hacking, “A criminal investigation has been initiated. A case file was opened today.”

Evidence has been turned over to the proper authorities.

Susana Martinez on the “American Comeback”

Here Mitt Romney in drag New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez explains her ideals in bringing America “back” from the economic duldrums.

As with most lamestream Republicans fronted by the McCleskey Clique, there’s no real plan to bring New Mexico and America “back,” only to slow our descent into irrelevancy and servitude.

It’s a choice between going over the fiscal cliff at 100 MPH versus going over the same cliff at 150 MPH (the Democrat way).

Anyone who advocates slamming on the brakes (IMAGINE THAT!), or turning around and going away from that fiscal cliff is ridiculed as an idiot, a lunatic or labeled as “greedy” and “mean-spirited” by the Democrats and their posterior-kissers in the lamestream snoozemedia.

<sarcasm>Gee, wow, what a choice! How could I not support Republicans with everything I am, everything I have, everything I do?</sarcasm>

For example, what is she doing, as Governor of the State of New Mexico, to resist the imposition of Obamacare upon us, the private-sector citizenry?

Besides implementing Obamacare, that is?

Walking with Richard Berry? Nope!

“Intellectual freedom cannot exist without political freedom; political freedom cannot exist without economic freedom; a free mind and a free market are corollaries.” – Ayn Rand

Except when a person draws conclusions that would lead them to courses of action other supporting candidates pushed by the McCleskey Clique. Like staying home, or supporting other candidates who seem to be more supportive of things like free-market economics, individual rights, Constitutionally-limited government and public-sector fiscal restraint.

Then that person is simply told “shut up and do as you’re told – what you do want, a Democrat in office?!”

In the online environment, that missive is often misspelled, with many exclamation points added at the end:

“shut up n do as ur told – wat do u want, a Democrat in office!!!!!!”

2. August 17, Saturday. 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon. Walk with Mayor Richard Berry. Meet at the _____________ Ranch Community Park, _____ Universe NW – a little north of ________ Blvd NW on Universe. Look for the Berry for Mayor Signs. For a map, access http://mapq.st/xxxxxxx.

First of all, Berry is a Keynesian – he supports big spending public works projects as a way to reward his buddies in the construction industry who donate to his political coffers. I cite the APS West Side Stadium and the proposed 50-mile bike path around the city as examples of his big-spending tendencies. Back in 2011, he pitched these with an op-ed piece in the Albuquerque Journal :

Mayor Urging ‘Yes’ Vote on Tuesday for Bonds

Here’s another bit about a previous version of “ABQ the PLAN” – or perhaps to be resurrected as “ABQ the PLAN II,” to be served up to us in 2014 after Berry’s re-election?

Sports Complex, Bike Trail, Boardwalk And White-Water Park Would Go to Voters

Yeah, that’s what we need – a white-water park. So while We The Private Citizens are directed to limit our water usage, considering that we live in a desert, it’s OK for the public sector to throw the stuff around willy-nilly?

Remember the 50-mile bike path around the city? Yeah, that’s an absolute necessity.

Mayor Seeks Proposals To Complete 50-Mile Bike Loop

Remember the Paseo Project? Originally, the price tag was 46 million, now it’s up to 93 million. I know inflation is getting worse, but this is ridiculous.

City Seeks $46 Million for Paseo, I-25 Project – Thursday, 8 December 2011

Paseo project wins fed approvals – Tuesday, 30 April 2013

Design team is chosen for Paseo/I-25 – Monday, 5 August 2013

See also http://abqjournal.com/search?q=Paseo+I-25+project+93+million

So Berry comes across as Obama with an “R” after his name. But he’s got that magic Big R, so he MUST the proper guy to support, correct?

Walking Albuquerque’s Westside neighborhoods with the Mayor will be State Senator Sander Rue, State Representatives Tom Anderson, Paul Pacheco and Monica Youngblood, City Councilor Dan Lewis, and Bernalillo County Commissioner Lonnie Talbert.

Paul Pacheco and Monica Youngblood were two of the eight Republicans who chose to kick gun owners around like a soccer ball when they supported HB77 in the last Legislative session.

As with Richard Berry, they deserve to lose their re-election bids.

Better an up-front enemy than a back-stabber professing friendship.

Andy Nunez (R? — Hatch)

——– Original Message ——–

2012 Hero Update — It sounds like 2012 NMBC HERO Andy Nunez has plans for improving our state and is making an important announcement TODAY [August 6]. Former State Representative and Mayor of Hatch, will hold a press conference at the Secretary of State’s office in Santa Fe today, August 6th, 2013 at 10:00 am. According to information out yesterday, Mr. Nunez will officially change his voter registration and then make an announcement about his future endeavors on behalf of this great state.

The NMBC knows Mr. Nunez well, a native New Mexican who has always been dedicated to the well-being of our state. He served as a state representative from 2001 through 2012 and is currently serving as the Mayor of Hatch. We can’t wait to see what his plans are!

——– Original Message Ends ——–

Since 2011, Nuñez has been registered as an “Independent” (officially known as “Decline To State” or “DTS” in New Mexico) since dropping out of the Jackass Clique.

Yesterday (Tuesday, 6 August 2013), Nuñez announced that he’s now a Republican in order to seek a return to the State House seat he once held as a Democrat and an “Independent.” See here for the details –

http://watchdog.org/99493/nm-politician-goes-from-democrat-to-independent-to-republican/

So he’s joining the Republicans after the McCleskey Clique of the NMGOP stabbed him in the back in the 2012 elections – from the above article:

Despite consistently voting with Republicans and carrying a controversial bill aimed at repealing the state law granting driver’s licenses to undocumented workers, Nuñez saw a political action committee of Republican Gov. Susana Martinez send out mailers against him, Nuñez said.

The question for those who support the ideals of free-market economics, Constitutionally-limited government, individual rights and public-sector fiscal restraint is this:

Now that Nuñez is in the GOP camp, will he bend his knee to accept the leash and yoke from the McCleskey Clique?

Will Nuñez sign off on the Bush / McCain / Romney version of Big Government Keynesianism when McCleskey et al deem doing so to be politically expedient?

Will Nuñez become a rural version of Albuquerque’s Richard Berry, stumping for big, expensive projects like the APS West Side stadium and the 50-mile bike path around Albuquerque?

That IS what seems to be necessary to get into the good graces of the GOP party-archs headed up by John Billingsley. As it seemed to be during the reigns of Harvey Yates, Monty Newman, etc., etc.

For example, Susana Martinez has basically signed off on ObamaCare, creating a “state-level health-care exchange” as mandated by Obama’s copy-and-paste job from RomneyCare in Massachusetts. It was initially billed as a website where consumers could compare health care plans – sort of a medical version of Priceline.com (or Pricewatch.com) or Travelocity. So why exactly does such a site require a thirteen-member Board of Directors?

And then she supported expanding Medicare, as called for in ObamaCare.

What gives?

Those who put the principles of free-market economics, Constitutionally-limited government, individual rights and public-sector fiscal restraint above any sort of partisan affiliation want to know.

Another question for Billingsley and McCleskey:

Why should we care about your Democrat-wannabe candidates who profess to support the above-mentioned principles during election seasons, then blow off those same principles after getting elected?

I cite both of the Bush Presidents, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Heather Wilson and Rudy Giuliani as examples here.

I prefer an up-front opponent than a back-stabber professing friendship any day of the week.

About the CPB, Republicans and Statism

7/26/2013 6:29 AM:

FYI: In addition to foundation money, tax dollars are also given to the CPB which runs PBS stations around the nation. The taxpayer is not asked whether he wishes to contribute. That should be stopped and we have the right to demand it.

Starting in 1994, the Republicans have been promising to do exactly this – defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting – during most if not all election seasons.

From 1994 to 2007, the Republicans held majorities in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate.

Yet the CPB never lost a penny in funding.

Thus, either the Republicans are so incompetent that they are unable to organize enough votes to defund the CPB while they hold legislative majorities . . .

OR

There are enough Republicans for whom this particular issue is nothing more than PR copy for their re-election campaigns – “red meat for the conservatives,” soon to be forgotten after getting another term. Then when CPB’s budget comes up for renewal, they find “reasons” to vote in favor of it.

I disagree that “we have no voice.” We have plenty of voices. And we do have access to the media.

In these days of Blogspot, WordPress and YouTube, media access for the common citizen keeps getting easier and easier.

In my judgement the causes of the Republican point of view not being disseminated merits an essay.

What exactly is the “Republican point of view” ?

There seems to be a misconception out there in GOP circles that the Republican Party is about free markets, Constitutionally-limited government, individual rights and public sector fiscal restraint.

Given the track records of John McCain, George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush and Richard Nixon, that can hardly be true. The federal government never shrunk much if any in terms on expense or intrusiveness under any of the administrations of the above presidents.

Even under “The Gipper” Ronald Reagan, the GOP’s patron saint of the 20th Century, the expense and intrusiveness of Washington DC expanded greatly. Reagan talked a decent game, but never really walked the walk.

Nor did President-wannabe Romney shrink government at the state level while he was Governor of Massachusetts.

While Senator-wannabe Heather Wilson was in the U.S. House as a “representative” for New Mexico’s 1st District, she enthusiastically supported the single biggest expansion of the welfare state in the “Oughts” of the 21st Century – Medicare Part D, signed into “law” by George W. Bush in 2003.

So why exactly should people who DO care about free markets, Constitutionally-limited government, individual rights and public sector fiscal restraint care in the slightest about the “Republican point of view” ?

He made his money through valuable capitalist methods: individual rights of privately owned property, voluntary trade, limited government and free markets. But in his basic premises he is wedded to the welfare state, which means the principle of unlimited government. In other words: statism.

I know the original comment was about Bill Gates, but this was and is also true of Mittens Romney, the GOP’s 2012 presidential offering.

While perusing the forums of Free Republic, I found the following snipe attempt in response to a posting about supporting Ron Paul:

A flying saucer on every rooftop.

Well . . .

If we did get that “flying saucer on every rooftop,” then Mr. “familyop” won’t have much justification to snivel “Who will build the roads?!” as he (?) whines in support of the GOP’s social-engineering-and-welfare scheme of the day.

But do we really need government to spend a few million FRN on “rebuilding” roads? And forget about the hassles of traffic diversions, blockages, jams, and such.

NO, we do not.

But if private citizens build and repair the roads without government direction and subsidy, then what excuse would law enforcement have to levy double and triple fines for speeding through “construction zones” around town? And they do it, at least here in Albuquerque, even when the crews the extra fines are supposed to protect have gone home for the day.
