Happy Independence Day — From a 21st Century Tory

My inbox is always bursting with spam —

Subject: Happy Independence Day!

What’s amusing about this is that Michelle Lujan Grisham is the 21st century New Mexico equivalent of an 18th century British Tory.

A little histoy lesson here — the Tories were the British political party who were opposed to the American Revolution of 1776. They were whom the Declaration of Independence was a series of complaints against when it was signed at Independence Hall (then the Pennsylvania State House).

In short, they were the Big Government party of the United Kingdom of the 1760s and 1770s.

Doesn’t Big Government neatly summarize the political career of Michelle Lujan Grisham? When has she EVER supported making government smaller, less intrusive, less expensive? Not much that we here in New Mexico have seen.

Grisham has little to no respect for the individual right to own and carry weapons, she’s always in favor of expanding the welfare state, and she signs off on Democrat-sponsored corporate welfare while complaining about corporations being under-regulated. If you’re a farmer or rancher, she doesn’t seem to care if your land is seized out from under you by the BLM, Forest Service, Fish & Wildlife, EPA, or whoever else, just so long as it fits the current Democrat narrative.

What’s also amusing is that today’s British Tories (the Conservative Party, by their own name) are the “across-the-pond” equivalent of America’s Republicans — they advertise themselves as moderate libertarians during the campaign season, then govern as moderate Democrats (Labour Party for the UK Conservatives).

If you want the real deal, then go with actual, brand-name Libertarians here in the States. For the UK, I would suggest either the Libertarian Party UK [LPUK] or UK Independence Party [UKIP]

Washington’s (and My Own?) Birthd . . . Week

Got this recently from The Daily Reckoning:

The Daily Reckoning – Monday, February 18, 2013

Greg Kadajski checking in today from Baltimore, Maryland . . .

Dear Reader,

Today is “Washington’s Birthday.” Well . . . not really. George Washington was actually born on February 22nd. But thanks to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act – the purpose of which you can only guess at – we now celebrate it on the third Monday of February.

And so, in a sense, the US government now mandates that “February 22nd” actually fall somewhere between February 15th and February 21st of each calendar year.

Yup . . . That seems in keeping with a governmental view of the facts.

Considering that my own birthday falls into this same time frame (21 February), does this apply to me as well?

Can I get a guaranteed day off with pay, as the Posties do every year for “President’s Day” ?

LP Monday Message: High Unemployment on Labor Day

September 6, 2010

Dear Friend of Liberty,

It’s hard to celebrate Labor Day when unemployment is 9.6 percent.

Government interference is the single biggest cause of unemployment. Minimum wage laws, OSHA, ADA, etc., etc., make it difficult both to hire and to fire workers. (And when it’s difficult to fire workers, it’s much less likely that they will be hired in the first place.) To reduce unemployment, we need to start repealing laws!

Section 2.7 of the Libertarian Party platform states: “We support repeal of all laws which impede the ability of any person to find employment. We oppose government-fostered forced retirement. We support the right of free persons to associate or not associate in labor unions, and an employer should have the right to recognize or refuse to recognize a union. We oppose government interference in bargaining, such as compulsory arbitration or imposing an obligation to bargain.”

I read today that President Obama wants another $50 billion in Keynesian stimulus spending. Stimulus supporters think that government spending creates jobs. What they don’t seem to understand is that the money is taken out of the private sector, which decreases private sector spending and investment, and that destroys jobs. I believe that stimulus spending destroys more jobs than it creates. We’d be much better off with the laissez-faire policies advocated by Austrian economic theory.

It makes me mad to think of all the ways the Republican and Democratic congresses, and presidents Bush and Obama, have hurt the private sector with all their stimulus and bailout programs. (Remember George W. Bush’s 2008 “Economic Stimulus Act” with all the $600 “rebate” checks?)

If you’d like to help fight them, please participate in Quiz Across America.

Sincerely,

Wes Benedict
Executive Director
Libertarian National Committee

P.S. If you have not already done so, please join the Libertarian Party. We are the only political party dedicated to free markets and civil liberties. You can also renew your membership. Or, you can make a contribution separate from membership.
